Companies often grapple with the challenges of respecting customer privacy. Although most firms do not seek to cause or do harm, data breaches, inadvertent misuse of data, and unauthorized publishing of data seem to ultimately happen. Data on a social media site, on a shopping site, or from your gym membership may seem sensitive. But, […]

There is an open debate among economists and business leaders on why digitization leads to a near winner take-all business model. We see the dominance of one search tool in Google and Netflix over other movie providers. In decades past, it was common to have a movie theater in each community and local bakers everywhere. In other business models, especially those driven by personal relationships and locality, we have seen many scores of offerings simultaneously. In fact, achieving scale for the seller was very hard.

On November 30, 2018, we lost President George Herbert Walker Bush. He offers us so many leadership lessons, and quite many of those are not celebrated or introduced with braggadocio. That was not his style. In the election of 1992, I recall the excitement of Ross Perot. He was in; he was out, he was […]

I recently wrote about how social media, in particular, Facebook can map the fandom of college football and NFL fans. These examples show how social media and digital operators can leverage data to measure assets, like the value of teams, the size and location of college alumni, and even put a price on things like […]

Everyday Lessons from the Facebook Data Scandal As the facts come out slowly, there is convincing revelation that what Facebook did and did not do that was highly misguided. There are other realities of the nature of big data capture and digital surveillance in our lives that we must reconsider. Indeed, the notion of privacy […]

This weekend, we learned that Verizon has agreed to purchase Yahoo! for $4.83 billion dollars. Recently, Salesforce.com CEO, Mark Benioff announced that it would have paid more than the $26.2 billion paid by Microsoft for LinkedIn. With Verizon’s $4.4 billion purchase of AOL last year, these mega transactions raise some questions about what is a […]

Things are a bit different this Fall at Northwestern University, and it feels great! The Wildcats are undefeated and ranked ahead of Michigan, who they will meet on Saturday in one of the biggest games for the Wildcats in recent memory. Yet, Michigan is favored in the game. Go figure. College football offers us a […]

With the NFL season in full swing, I thought I would share a graphic that impressed me. It shows how Data Visualization and the power of Data Science can help us understand more about our lives and things we enjoy. It was developed by Sean Taylor of the Facebook Data Science Team, and credits go […]
